古文研究法146-1 三つのしるべ(藤井高尚)より：今の京となりて文(ふみ)の優れて良きは、伊勢の物語・源氏の物語なり。伊勢物語は詞(ことば)少なくいといと深き心を言はでこめたる書き様(ざま)いひ知らず面白し。源氏物語は深き心を下には込めながら、うはべはもののくまぐままで残りなく書き尽くせるさま、いはむ方(かた)なくめでたしともめでたし。このふた物語をおきては、大和の物語をかしきふしありて優れたり。さては狭衣(さごろも)の物語面白し。
今の平安京になって以降、文章の素晴らしいのは伊勢物語と源氏物語だ。伊勢物語は表現が簡潔でしかも非常に深い心情を言外に含ませた書きぶりが何とも言えず面白い。源氏物語は内面に深い心情を含むと同時に、表現のほうでは物事を至れり尽くせりに描写している点が何とも言えないほど飛び切り面白い。この二つ以外では大和物語が興趣の深いところがあって面白い。それから狭衣物語もなかなか結構です。
N君：江戸時代初期の文学評論です。「文」は「文学作品」です。「めでたしともめでたし」は強調表現で「とびきり面白い」の意。
It is "The Story of Ise" written in the Heian age that has wonderful expressions in many ways. "The Tale of Genji" is no less wonderful than that. The former is indeed tasteful because the style written concisely contains a deep emotion. The latter is also tasteful because the details express the inner world of the characters. Besides these two, "The Story of Yamato" has nothing to say regards to its elegance. "The Story of Sagoromo" is fine, too.

"The Story of Ise" and "The Tale of Genji" are the most excellent works that have been written since the Heian age. Very interestingly, the former is written in a very simple style implying the author's deep feelings. The latter is also written with her deep feelings hidden, but Shikibu gives a detailed description of characters as perfectly as she can. She is an exceptionally skillful writer. Besides these two, there are interesting stories. One is "The Story of Yamato" written with a refined skill. The other is "The Story of Sagoromo" too good to disregard.
