古文研究法61-2 枕草子：よき人の御(おん)ことはさらなり。下衆(げす)などのほどにも親などの愛(かな)しうする子は目立て耳立てられていたはしうこそ覚ゆれ。見る甲斐あるは、ことはり、いかが思はざらむ、と覚ゆ。殊(こと)なることなきはまた、これをかなしと思ふらむは、親なればぞかし。
高位高官の人の場合は言うまでもなく、身分の低い者たちの間でも、親が可愛がる子は他人から注目されて、なおざりにできない感じだ。他人から見ても立派な子はなるほど親がその子をどうして可愛がらないことがあろうか(可愛がるのも道理だ)と感じられる。平凡で取り柄のない子であっても親はその子を可愛いと思うものなんだろうが、それは親だからこそだ、としみじみ心を動かされる。
N君：「良き人」は「高位の人」、「下衆」は「身分の低い人」。形容詞「かなし」は「かわいい」の意なので要注意です。「いたはし」は「大切にしたい」の意味でありここでは「なおざりにできない」と訳しています。「見る甲斐ある」「殊なることなき」は共に連体形であることに注意して、前回同様「人」を補って考えます。ここでは「人」というより「子」ですね。
A child who is loved by his or her parents is apt to draw people's attention. Therefore we cannot neglect his or her behavior. This feeling is quite natural in persons of high rank, and true also in low ranks. Suppose anyone thinks him a brilliant boy. No wonder his parents are affectionate to him. On the other hand, parents will love their child no matter how mediocre and worthless he is. This is just because they are the very parents of him. I am quite moved by their love that asks for nothing in turn.
S先生：まずまずです。第3文 This feeling is quite natural in persons of high rank, and true also in low ranks.「この感じは高位の人たちの間では普通だし、低位の人たちにもあてはまる」は、間違いではありませんが、なんとなく日本語的な発想なのが気にかかります。たとえば It has nothing to do with their ranks that parents love their children. くらいにするのはどうでしょうか。第4文の Suppose を使った構文「～だとしてみよう」や、第5文の No wonder を使った構文「～なのは無理もない」は、どちらも適切に使うことができました。第7文の This is just because they are the very parents of him.「その訳は、彼らが将にその取り柄のない子の親だからです」は、たしかにこれで間違いではないのですが、なんというか、屋上屋を重ねる、の感じがあるのです。This is just because で充分強調されているので they are the very parents of him はやめにして、普通に they are parents と簡潔に書きたい。最後の第8文 I am quite moved by their love that asks for nothing in turn.「子に対する親の無償の愛に心動かされる」という文章は発想が素晴らしい。この調子で作文を続けて下さい。
Whether they are persons of high rank or low class, parents love their children. It is not to be disregarded that such children are paid much attention to. It is natural that the children whom others think brilliant (should) be loved by their parents. However mediocre they are, parents will love them. I cannot but be moved to see that it is just because they are parents.
N君：先生の第1文 Whether節中の they は主節の parents を受けている、と考えてよいですか？
S先生：その通りです。前回も出てきた「代名詞が名詞の前に出てくる」というパターンですね。
N君：先生の第2文 It is not to be disregarded that ～ は「～を無視できない」と訳してよいですか？
S先生：それでよいです。慣用句ではありませんが、結構決まった言い方になっている、と考えてもらってよいと思います。
