古文研究法54-2 方丈記：恐ろしき山ならねどフクロウの声を憐れむにつけても、山中の景色、機(をり)につけて尽くることなし。況(いはん)や深く思ひ深く知れらむ人のためには、これにしも限るべからず。
恐ろしい山ではないが、フクロウの声にしみじみと心を動かされるにつけても、山中の景色は時節ごとに無限の面白さがある。まして、感受性も細やかで物事を深く知っている人がいたとしたら、その人にとっては、面白さは景色の変化だけではないに違いない。
N君：哲学的で難解な文章です。終わりのほうに出てくる「これ」は「山中の景色」を指していますが、ここを見抜くのは相当の古文読解力が必要だと思います。物事に通じている人が面白味を感じるのは、山の景色変化、以外に何があるというのか？ 仏道修行によって悟りの境地へ近づいていくことが面白いのでしょうか。深すぎて僕には分かりませんが、超一流大学の入試ではこういう所が問われるのだろうと思います。
Although owls habit near here, I have never felt uneasy in the mountains. On the contrary, the hoot of an owl comes home to my heart. Similarly I am extremely touched by various scenes observed in the mountain on every season. If there is a man who is more sensitive and sensible about things than I, he will feel much satisfaction not only in the changes of the landscape but also in the reality that he is approaching the spiritual enlightenment of Buddha.
S先生：第3文の on every season では前置詞 on は不要です。そのまま every season で副詞句になります。第4文後半の not only in A but also in B の部分は、なかなか深く解釈しましたね。このような作文は意訳と呼ばれるものですが、試験ではお薦めできません。今は試験ではないので、N君の心意気を受け取っておきましょう。
The mountain does not seem to be particularly horrible. I am pensively moved to hear an owl hoot. I cannot but feel limitlessly interesting to see the view of the mountain changed every season. If there is a man more sensible and sensitive enough to understand things deeply than me, he won't think it is only the changes of the view that makes him interested. Then what is it ?
N君：than I, than me どちらでもOKですか？
S先生：than は接続詞なので正しくは I ですが、me も使われます。
N君：先生の作文の最後にある Then what is it ? も意訳ですか。
