帚木99・100：(左馬頭の言葉続き)また、ゑ所に上手おほかれど、墨がきに選ばれて次々にさらに劣り勝るけぢめ、ふとしも見え分かれず。かかれど、人の見及ばぬ蓬莱の山、荒海の怒れる魚(いほ)の姿、唐国の激しきけだものの形、目に見えぬ鬼の顔などの、おどろおどろしく作りたるものは、心にまかせてひときは目驚かして、じちには似ざらめどさてありぬべし。
また宮中の絵所にも上手な絵描きはいくらもおりましょう。その中で、絵の輪郭を墨描きしていくようなのは、みな手腕のある者ばかりが選ばれておりますから、描いたものをちょっと見ただけでは、誰が本当の名人であるかはなかなか分かりません。しかしその絵がたとえば誰も実物を見たことのない蓬莱の山だとか、あるいは荒海の中で怒り狂う怪魚だとか、唐国の獰猛な獣どもだとか、目には見えない鬼の顔だとか、そういうおどろおどろしい絵柄は、なにしろ誰も見たことがないんですから、どんどん空想にまかせて、あっと驚くような姿に描いたらよろしいんです。実際にそれが本物に似ていないかもしれないとしたって、こちらとしては、まあそんなものかと思って見るんです。

S先生：今日もたくさんの注文があります。第2文は回りくどくて内容が頭に入って来ないので思い切って、Among them only some capable painters can do Indian ink paintings.「絵所の絵描きの中には墨描きの出来る者も何人かいるが、、、」として次の第3文につなげていきます。第3文も大幅に削って、Just a glance at them cannot tell who is the highest master. としましょう。第3文の everyone has not seen は every+not で部分否定になっていて、このままだと「皆が見たわけではない蓬莱山」となって「見たことのある人もいる」となってしまい、不合理ですので、 no one has ever seen 「誰も見たことのない蓬莱山」としましょう。第4文と第5文を短く挿入したのはとても良かった。特に第4文の Every imagination can be accepted. はパラグラフ全体の理解に役立っていると思いました。第6文末の the truth「真理」よりも genuine「天燃、自然」のほうが合っていると思います。この場合定冠詞は置かなくてよいでしょう。
