古文研究法 あとがき 6：西洋ではどれほど古典が尊重されているか、よく日本人全体で考え直して欲しい。近松門左衛門の著名な作品について何事も答えられなかった日本外交官が、国際的な恥をかいた話もあるのだから。

N君：古典ってメチャ大切なんですね。僕は小西先生の古文研究法を読んだから、最低限のラインを確保したと思ってます。

I want all of Japanese to think again of how seriously classics count in the western countries.  Do you know the episode that a Japanese diplomat who could not talk about a famous work described by Chikamatsu Monzaemon was embarrassed in public ?

S先生：第1文に使われた自動詞 count「重きを成す」をちゃんと使えるようになった、ということは英作文の力が付いてきている証拠です。最近アメリカで黒人に対する差別に対して「黒人の命を大切にしよう」という運動があり、多くの人々が Black lives matter というプラカードを掲げてデモをやっていました。この matter も count に似た自動詞で「問題となる、重きを成している、大切だ」のような意味です。 第2文の a famous work described by ～　の described はなくても分かるので除外してよいです。

I propose to all Japanese that you (should) rethink about how carefully their classics are read in western countries.  It is said that a certain Japanese diplomat was unable to talk on anything about Chikamatsu Monzaemon's well-known work when he was asked it.  How shameful !

古文研究法 あとがき 5：私は1年半あまりアメリカの大学で比較文学という研究をしていたが、その間、自国の古典がどんなに尊いものであるかを身に沁みて悟らされた。

N君：留学すると色々見えるんですね。

I became quite aware of how the classical literature of my own country was important while I had been studying comparative literature in an American college for one and half year.

S先生：第1文 be aware of の目的語となる名詞節に問題があります。ここの語順は how important the classical literature of my own country was として下さい。important を how のすぐ後ろにもって来るのがよいでしょう。

I had been studying comparative literature in an American college for more than a year and half.  Then I found how worthy our classics were to study.

N君：先生の第2文は I found how our classics were worthy to study  ではなくて I found how worthy our classics to study がよい、ということですね。

S先生：その通りです。名詞節になった時に how と形容詞を一塊で扱いたい、ということですね。

古文研究法 あとがき 4：そうして悪文の標本としか思えないような舌足らずの現代文が入試問題に登場し、吹けば飛ぶような三文作家の名が人麻呂や紫式部や芭蕉と並んで出題されている。こんなばかげた話はない。

N君：小西先生の怒りが滲んでいます。僕らが「国語の教科書に出ているんだから立派な文章なのだろう」と信じていたものが実は程度の低いものだったとは驚きです。

As a result, some mediocre works began to appear in entrance exams.  Including hackneyed phrases, they are just like the samples of wrong sentences.  It is indeed rediculous that the light names of present hack writers rank with Hitomaro, Murasaki-Shikibu, and Basho.

S先生：第3文末の Hitomaro, Murasaki-Shikibu, and Basho がいけません。ここは「現代の三文作家の名前」と比べる場面ですから、Hitomaro's, Murasaki-Shikibu's, and Basho's とすべきです。日本語と違って英語はこういうところが厳密なのです。

As a result, poor contemporary works began to be used as questions on entrance examinations.  And cheap writer's worthless works came to be set as problems as if they were equal to Hitomaro's, Shikibu's and Basho's masterpieces.  What a nonsense !

N君：先生の第1文 began to be used as questions on entrance examinations の前置詞は、僕の感覚では on ではなくて in なのですが、、、、。

S先生：in もよいと思います。しかしこの場面では「俎上に乗る」という雰囲気があるので on にしてみました。

古文研究法 あとがき 3：ところが戦後の日本では古典を軽視することが進歩的であるかのような誤った考え方が横行し、西洋の近代芸術をまねることが日本を世界的にするとでも考えているらしい人達は、高校の教科課程から古典をひどく減らしてしまった。

N君：昭和30年頃に書かれたこの記述は、第521回でK先輩が述べていたことと符合します。昭和20年代30年代というのは日本の古典が軽視された時代で、小西先生にとっては受難の時代だったでしょう。

However, in a particular atmosphere after the World War II, Japanese scholars were obsessed by an odd idea that making little of classics was progressive and cool.  Especially, bureaucrats in the Ministry of Education, who misunderstood that mimicking western arts would make Japan global, decreased works of classical literature from the textbooks used in high schools.

S先生：よく書けていますが第1文末の progressive and cool がいけません。この並びは重いものが先に来ていますね。英語はいつでも軽前重後なので cool and progressive にしたいところ。この方が発音もし易いですよね。

To my regret, however, after the World War II the scholars of Japanese classics were possessed with a wrong idea that it was much more progressive to make little of classics.  They thought that it would be useful in making our culture worldwide to imitate western modern arts.  And of all things, they were blindly bold enough to cut down the number of classics from high school textbooks.

N君：先生の第3文冒頭にある of all things はどういう意味でしょうか？

S先生：「事もあろうに、よりによって」のような意味です。furthermore や especially に似ていますがちょっと違いますね。

古文研究法 あとがき 2 ：自分の国の古典というものは民族の宝である。立派な国の立派な人たちは皆、自国の古典について深い理解と高い誇りを持っている。イギリスでもフランスでもソ連でも中国でも、古典は大変尊重されている。古典を尊重しないような国は、下等な連中しか住んでいない国だと考えて差支えない。

N君：おそらく昭和30年頃に書かれた小西先生のこの文章ですが、令和の現代にもビンビン響いています。

To bigin with, the classical literature of your country is the treasure of your nation.  All independent people living in independent countries have a deep understanding and a high pride about the classical literature of their own countries.  In Great Britain, French, Russia and also in China, classical literature is highly esteemed.  You may safely say that a country whose classical literature is not respected is a country where all the people are low and mean.

S先生：第2文の have a deep understanding and a high pride about ～　がいけません。そもそも have a deep understanding of ～ と have a high pride in ～ が正しい前置詞の使い方ですから、もとの形を生かすなら have a deep understanding of and a high pride in ～ とするのがよいでしょう。しかし前置詞が異なるのにこの形にこだわるのはちょっと無理があるようにも思えます。そこで deeply understand and take a high pride in ～　とするのがスッキリして良いでしょう。

Needless to say, your country's classics are your treasure.  The great people of a great country show (a) great pride in their classics and have a deep understanding of them.  Classics are greatly valued in almost all countries : Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, China、、、、.  You can safely assert that a country whose people have no respect for their classics is a country the people of which are quite uneducated.

N君：先生の第3文後半の a country the people of which の部分は a country whose people と言い換えてもよいですか？

S先生：第3文では前半に関係代名詞 whose が登場しているので、後半にも出てくることは避けたい。そこで所有格関係代名詞のやや特殊な形を使ってみました。

古文研究法 あとがき 1：長々と古文の勉強について述べてきた。辛抱して終わりまで読んで下さった諸君に厚く感謝したい。というのは、この本を私が書いたのは、入学試験の対策なんかだけに役立てようとしたわけではなく、試験勉強というやむを得ない仕事に対処するうち、いつとなく古典の正しい理解を身に付けるところまで行って欲しいと念願したからである。

N君：いよいよ最後の部分に突入しました。僕の英作文の総仕上げです。最後のネタは古典ではなく「小西甚一先生が古文研究法の巻末に綴った後書き」です。これがほれぼれするような名文なので、この名文を魂込めて英訳することを本シリーズの掉尾(とうび)とさせて頂きます。

In this book I have told you tediously about how to learn the classical literature of Japan.  I would like to give my thanks for your patient way to read through the book.   The reason why I wrote it is not only that you will be able to make use of it for your entrance examination, but also that I want you to unconsciously acquire the right understanding of classical literature while you are forced to cope with exams.

S先生：良いです。構成が良い。目立ちませんが、全体を現在時制で統一したことも良かった。第2文の your patient way はちょっと堅苦しい感じがしました。your patience のほうがよいでしょう。

I have written about how to study Japanese classics too redundantly.  I would like to express my deepest gratitude for your having read through this book with patience.  I have written this book in order not for you to make use of it for your entrance examination but (for you) to correctly understand classics in spite of yourself while you are compelled to study for your exam.

古文研究法155-2 大鏡より：(宣耀殿女御が)古今うかべさせ給へり、と聞かせ給ひて、帝、試みに本を隠して女御には見せ奉り給はで「やまとうたは」とあるを始めにて、前の句の言葉を仰せられつつ問はせ給ひけるに、言ひ違(たが)へ給ふ、言葉にても歌にてもなかりけり。

古今集をそらんじているとの噂だったので、帝は試しに text を隠しておいて宣耀殿女御には見せないままで、紀貫之「やまとうたは」で始まる仮名序からスタートして、上句をおっしゃってはお尋ねになったところ、詞書(ことばがき)だって歌だって女御が言い違えたことはいっぺんもなかった。

N君：「浮かぶ」は多義語で「水に浮かぶ」「成仏する」もありますが、ここでは「暗唱する」の意味です。「本」はここでは「古今集」を指していると考えられます。紀貫之「仮名序」の出だしは「やまとうたは人の心を種として万(よろづ)の言(こと)の葉とぞなれりける、、、、」で、これは名文です。本シリーズでも色々なところに顔を出しました。

Hearing that She could recite all the poems from the Kokin Collection, He tried inquiring Her about the contents from the initial phrase 'Yamato-uta ha 、、、' to the afterwards.  Presenting the first half of the poems, He tested whether She had remembered the second half.  To His surprise, She never failed to correctly recite the forewords and poems.

S先生：第2文主節の動詞 test がいけません。test は節を目的語に取らないのです。ここは tested をやめて confirmed くらいにしておきましょう。このほかの部分はよく書けています。

Hearing that she could recite all the poems from the Kokin Collection, He wanted to make sure if it was true, by reading the first half of the poems.  To His great surprise, She was able to correctly recite every poem including the preface by Ki-no-Tsurayuki.

N君：第535回以来やってきた小西甚一先生「古文研究法」の本文の検討が終了しました。イヤー、長かった。本シリーズも本来ここで終了すべきなのですが、小西先生が「古文研究法」の巻末に記した「あとがき」が名文中の名文なので、こいつを英訳して本シリーズの総仕上げにしたいと思います。そういうことなのであと数回続きます。
