金銀がなくては越えることのできない冬と春の峠、すなわちこれは借金の山というわけだが、その山の高さはとても登り切れないほど厄介なものだ。厄介者といえば人はそれぞれ子というものに収入相当の費用が掛かり、その場その場では目に見えないけれども、1年経って積算してみると舟にも車にも積みきれないほどの支出になる。殊に近頃は、、、、
N君：お金の話になると西鶴先生の舌も滑らかです。相当苦労したのでしょう。「ほだし」は「足手まとい、係累、厄介なこと」の意味です。「身代」は「収入」、「年中に積もりて」は「1年分を積算してみると」くらいの意味になります。
The day is a boundary between winter and spring. It is, as it were, a pass we cannot go over without money. In other words, this is a mountain of debt, which is too high to climb. The problem of debt is a great annoyance. People will often expend considerable money on nurturing their children. The daily expenditure is not conspicuous but the annual amount is surprisingly and unexpectedly large to the extent that a car and a ship is too small to carry it.
S先生：第2文 It is, as it were, ～「それは、いわば、～」は感じが出ています。第5文の expend considerable money の expend は spend でもよいでしょう。労力や時間を費やす場合は expend、金銭を費やす場合は spend、という話もありますが、実際には入り混じっているようなのであまり気を使うことはないでしょう。第6文に to the extent that ～ が出ていて間違いではないですが、so large that ～ のように書くほうが簡潔です。細かいことですがこの時代には car はないので wagon「荷馬車」 のほうが良いでしょう。
They cannot cross a pass, a heap of debt, during winter and spring without a certain amount of money. It is so high that it is quite a burden for them to overcome. Nothing requires heavier expenditure than the care of children. It may not cost a great deal at a time, but it accumulates so much in a year that it can't be carried by a wagon or a ship.
