帚木35・36：(左馬頭の言葉続き) 受領(ずりょう)といひて人の国の事にかかづらひ営みて、品定まりたる中にもまたきざみきざみ有りて、中の品のけしうはあらぬ、えり出でつべき頃ほひなり。なまなまの上達部よりも非参議の四位どもの、世のおぼえ口惜しからず、もとのねざしいやしからぬ、やすらかに身をもてなしふるまひたる、いとかはらかなりや。
中流といえばまず受領なんてのがその代表でしょうけれど、あれらは地方の役人としてあくせく右往左往している。受領はもとから中流でしょうけれど、その中にもまた、中の上とか、中の下とか、いくつも段階がありますから、こうなればその中流の中でもそれなりに見識のある者を選ぶのが、まあ今どきはよろしかろうとそう思いますよ。思うに、上達部だなんて威張っていても中味はいい加減なんて連中よりも、参議になる前の四位というあたりの者で、声望も充分にあってしかも元来の家柄はそれなりの貴族だというようなのが、おっとりと上品に振る舞っている、そういうのはいかにもこざっぱりとしていい感じではありますまいか。

On the other hand, those of the fourth rank who are qualified to be councilors behave themselves calmly and decently. They, who were originally from nobles, have fame and popularity.
