古文研究法155-1 大鏡より：村上の御時の宣燿殿(せんえうでん)の女御、かたちをかしげに美しうおはしけり。帝いとかしこく時めかせ給ひてかく仰せられけるとか。「生きての世死にての後の後の世も 羽を交(かは)せる鳥となりなむ」。御返し、女御、「秋になることの葉だにも変はらずば 我も交せる枝となりなむ」。
村上天皇の御代の宣耀殿の女御は御器量が良くて愛らしくいらっしゃった。帝は彼女を大変寵愛してこんなふうに詠んだということだ。「生きているこの世ではもちろんのこと、死んでから後のあの世でも、比翼の鳥となって離れずに愛し合っていこうよ」。その返歌として女御は「秋になると木の葉の色は変わりますが、今の陛下の御言葉がもし変わらないなら、私も連理の枝となって御傍におりましょう」と詠んだ。
N君：比翼の鳥・連理の枝 は、白居易「長恨歌」の中で唐の玄宗皇帝・楊貴妃の永遠の愛が歌い上げられたその話に登場します。本シリーズでも第1回～第60回で検討しました。「ときめく」は「寵愛する」で、この単語は源氏物語桐壺の冒頭にも登場しました。これは本シリーズの第61回でした。
In the reign of Emperor Murakami, Empress Senyoden was famous for her beauty. Loving her indeed, His Majesty composed a poem : "Why don't you live together with me like the imaginary pair of male and female birds named Hiyoku-no-Tori, not only in the real world but also in the next one ?" Her Majesty also composed one to reply : "If your words never change unlike the leaves changing their colors in autumn, I will be together with you like the imaginary pair of male and female branches named Renri-no-Eda."
S先生：漢文的な対句表現を採り入れた英作文で、とても良いです。

N君：先生の第4文に出て来る shall はどういう用法ですか？
S先生：強い意志を表す shall です。第2次大戦の始めの頃 MacArthur がフィリピンからオーストラリアへ逃れる時に残した言葉 I shall return.「どんなことがあっても戻って来るぞ」が有名です。
N君：同じく第4文に believe in ～ が出ましたが、believe の他動詞と自動詞について教えて下さい。
S先生：研究社の辞書から例文を引いておきましょう。I believe you.「君の言う事を信じるよ」。I belive in you.「君の人格・力量を信頼してます」。
