古文研究法21-2 増鏡：(七条院＝後鳥羽院母の手紙)「あさましく、かくて月日経(へ)にけること。今日明日とも知らぬ命のうちに、いまひとたび、いかで見奉りてしがな。かくながらは死出の山路も越えやるべうもはべらでなむ」など、いと多く乱れ書き給へるを、御顔に押し当てて(後鳥羽院の歌)『たらちねの消えやらで待つ露の身を 風より先にいかで問はまし』。
(母七条院の手紙)「よくもまあ意外にもこんなふうで年月を過ごして参りましたこと。今日までか明日までか分からないような頼りないこの命があるうちに、もう一度、なんとかしてあなたにお目にかかりとうございます。このままでは死んでも、行くべき所へ行けそうもありません」などと、たいそう多くのことをお書きになっているのを見て、後鳥羽院はその手紙を顔に押し当てて歌を一つ詠んだ ー 「露のように消え易い命を消えないで待っている御母上様を今すぐにでもなんとかしてお訪ねしたい、もしできるなら風よりも先に」
N君：形容詞「あさまし」はこれまでも何回かでてきましたが「驚き呆れるくらいで」「意外で」のような意味です。「いかで」が出てくると反射的に反語を考えてしまいますがここで出て来た「いかで～てしがな」「いかで～まし」は共に強い希望・願望を表していて「なんとかして～したい」の意味です。和歌で「露」が出てくるとたいがい背後に「いつ消えるともしれない儚い命」という意味が隠れています。
In the letter she wrote a lot of incoherent things and ended with the remark as follows, "How long we spent a vacant time apart from each other ! I want to see you again before I lose the ephemeral life of mine. If I can't see you, I will be unable to go to another world without any trouble." He pushed His face onto the letter out of grief and composed a poem. "Right now I would like to visit my mother who is eagarly waiting for me in her short life like a dew. I wish to rally around her faster than the wind."
S先生：だいたい良いと思います。第1文の incoherent「一貫性のない」はかなり高級な単語です。最後のところの rally around は「殺到する、ドッと駆け寄る」のような強い言い方で、たとえば選挙などで応援していた候補が当選して支持者が一度に走り寄ってくるような時に使います。ここでは rally around は少し違う気がするので、普通に go to see くらいにしておきましょう。
Shichijoin said in her letter, "What severe years you have lived through ! How I wish I could see you again while I am living though I don't know how long I can live. If I should die without seeing you, I am afraid I wouldn't be able to go to the next world where I should." Reading her confused letter, the ex-Emperor composed a poem pushing it on His face : "Life is ephemeral like a dew. How I wish I could go to see my mother faster than the wind right now, for she is eagarly looking forward to seeing me again."
