S先生：古文研究法の途中ではありますが、今日は気分を変えて歌の英詞に触れてみましょう。皆さんもよくご存じの Amazing Grace を取り上げます。John Newton 作詞で、作曲者は不明。composed by an anonymous person というわけです。
Amazing Grace ! How sweet the sound ! That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I am found ; Was blind, but now I see.
素晴らしき神の恩寵！ その響きの甘美なこと！ その恩寵が私のような恥知らずを救って下さった。私はかつて見捨てられていたが今は(神によって)見出されている。かつては何も見えなかったが、今は(神の御姿を)見ることができる。
sound と found は韻を踏んでいます。me と see も韻を踏んでいますね。Was の前に I が隠れています。
'T was Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace my fears relieved ; How precious did that Grace appear ! The hour I first believed.
私の心に(神を)畏れることを教えてくれたのは恩寵であった。同時に恩寵は私の畏れを解き放って下さった。あの恩寵はなんと大切なものに見えたことか！ 私が初めて(神を)信じた時に。
'T は It のことです。fear と appear は韻を踏んでいます。同様に relieved と believed も韻を踏んでいます。ここまでの韻を見ると ABAB型になっているのが分かります。And Grace my fears relieved は普通なら And my fears relieved Grace となるはずですが、目的語を前に出して、きれいに韻を踏むように語順を変えたのでしょう。次の How precious did that Grace appear も実は did appear = appeared であり、これもきれいに韻を踏むための工夫だと考えられます。最後の The hour = The time = when でありここは本来副詞節になっています。
Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come. 'T was Grace that brought me safe thus far. And Grace will lead me home.
多くの危険・労苦・誘惑を通り抜けて、私は既に(神の国へ)来ている。こんなに遠くまで私を無事に連れてきて下さったのは神の恩寵であった。そしてこの恩寵は私を我が家(天国)へ導いて下さるだろう。
ここのフレーズには何故か韻がありません。一見 come と home の間に韻があるように見えますが、綴りが似ているだけで発音は異なります。さて作詞者 John Newton(1725-1807)は英国の奴隷商人で悪逆の限りを尽くした男でしたが、ある時嵐に遭遇して死に直面し運良く助かって神の恩寵に気付きました。やがてクリスチャンになり最後は牧師となりました。いくつかの讃美歌 hymn(発音は him と同じ)を作ったと言われますが、この Amazing Grace はその中で最も有名な歌です。この美しいメロディーには心洗われる思いがします。
さて Amazing Grace で少し慣れたと思いますので日本の歌詞にもチャレンジしてみましょう。まずはじめは 1913＝大正2年の「浜辺の歌」です。林古渓の作詞、成田為三の作曲です。
朝(あした)浜辺を彷徨(さまよ)えば 昔の事ぞ偲(しの)ばるる
風の音よ雲の様(さま)よ 寄する波も貝の色も
夕(ゆうべ)浜辺を廻(もとお)れば 昔の人ぞ偲(しの)ばるる
寄する波よ返す波よ 月の色も星の影も
N君：僕は趣味でギターを練習しているので、作文の前にコード進行を調べてみました。起承転結の転の頭にある D/F♯ の音がオシャレです。

When wandering about the beach at dawn, such trivial things as the sound of the wind, the color of clouds, the whispering sea and the tint of shells remind me of what happened long long ago. When roaming around the shore in the twilight, such ordinary landscape as the coming surf, the withdrawing ripple, the hue of the moon and the light of the stars always make me recall the people with whom I was on friendly terms long long ago.
S先生：対句表現を使って英作文してくれましたが重大な誤りがありました。第1文の接続詞付き分詞構文ですが、この部分の主語はどうみても I ですよね。それなのに主節の主語は such tivial things as ～ となっていて、これは完全に変です。分詞構文の節をやめて主語を I にしてしまいましょう。その際に wander about = wander around は句として自動詞なので次に on を補って on the beach としましょう。結局ここの節は When I am wandering about on the beach at dawn, となります。これに続く主節の長い主語ですが、such trivial things as を除外して下さい。このような説明的なものは不要です。第2文も全く同様に、前半を When I am roaming on the shore in the twilight, として、主節主語の Such ordinary landscape as を除外して下さい。ちなみに分詞構文の隠れた主語と主節の主語は同じであることが原則なのですが、どうしても異なってしまう場合には「独立分詞構文」と言って、This task concluded, he went shopping. のような例があるにはあります。
When I walk around on the beach in the morning, I recall the good old days. All seem to be just as they were : the sound of the wind, the way of floating clouds, the sound of lapping waves and the hues of shells. When I wander around on the beach in the evening, I recall my good old friends. All seem to be just as they were : lapping waves, falling waves, the moon shining brightly in the sky and the pale light of the stars.
N君：韻は morning と evening ですね。
S先生：お恥ずかしいですがそのくらいしか浮かびませんでした。さてもう一つ行きましょう。1927＝昭和2年 の「この道」です。北原白秋の作詞、山田耕筰の作曲です。歌詞の中に出て来る山査子(さんざし)はバラ科の落葉低木です。
この道はいつか来た道 ああそうだよ アカシアの花が咲いてる あの丘はいつか見た丘 ああそうだよ ほら白い時計台だよ この道はいつか来た道 ああそうだよ お母様と馬車で行ったよ あの雲もいつか見た雲 ああそうだよ 山査子(さんざし)の枝も垂れてる
N君：I have been to this road, for I remember seeing the acacia tree in bloom here. I have seen the hill over there, for I remember appreciating the white clock tower on its top. I have been to this road, for I remember going on a coach with my mother on this very road. I have also seen the clouds, for I remember the branches of a hawthorn hanging down.
S先生：だいたい良いと思います。remember の後に動名詞が来たときには「昔～であったことを思い出す」、不定詞が来た時には「今後～することを忘れない」という具合に、微妙な意味の違いがあったことを思い出しましょう。ここではちゃんと使えました。山田耕筰は日本語のアクセントをとても大切にした作曲家でした。歌ってみるとごく自然に響きます。最近の歌はここのところがええ加減になっている気がします。たとえば武田鉄矢さんは好きな歌手であり俳優さんですが、「贈る言葉」というヒット曲では”おくることば”の「こ」の字にアクセントが来てしまうので、なんとなく不自然に聴こえます。良い歌なのに惜しいと思います。

I remember having come to this road before. Oh, yes, I took this road riding in a carriage withmy dear mother when a child. I remember having seen those clouds high in the sky. Oh, yes, the twigs of a hawthorn are hanging down as I saw them then.
