(11) Got to the ant, thou sluggard ; conshider her ways, and be wise.
thou=you, sluggard「怠け者」。ant「蟻」を her で受けているところが面白いですね。「汝怠惰なる者よ、蟻のもとに行きそのなす様を見て知恵を得よ」。
(12) Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned ?
(13) He that spareth his rod hateth his son.
Spare the rod and spoil the child.
(14) A soft answer turneth away wrath : but grievous words stir up anger.
(15) Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
haughty=arrogant「傲慢な」。
(16) Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise.
(17) A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.
(18) As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.
後半は so he is. The thought is the mirror of a man.
(19) Drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
(20) Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein.
Whoso=Whoever, diggeth は dig の三単現。「穴を掘る者は自らこれに落ち入らん」。これは、身から出た錆、とか、人を呪わば穴二つ、みたいな意味でしょうか。
