He was apparently moved by the sound, walked up to the place just under the bamboo curtain beyond which she might be, and said wittily, 'There may be no footprints on the scattered maple leaves in this garden.  I may happen to be the first man who has visited here this evening.'  This comment was probably worked out after the classical poem in the Kokinwakashu.  Continuously, he added an impudent poem, 'Both your prominent Koto performance and the tasteful moonlight seem to be unable to draw the attention of a cold-hearted man.  I suppose so because there is no trace of someone dropping in before me.  Aha Sorry for my poor work.  Here is a man who wants to listen to and praise another wonderful tone of your Koto.  I wish you were generous with playing it once more time.'  How impertinent his way to seduce her !

その後の seem to be unable to do「つれない男の気を引くことはできなかったようだ」は過去のことなので、seem to have been unable to do とすべきでしょう。 あるいは one more time ならOKです。

He was so much impressed that he walked up to just behind the blind where she was playing the koto, saying sarcastically, 'No one seems to have stepped on the red leaves in this garden.'  He hinted at an old poem ; 'Autumn has come, with the red leaves scattered all around the garden, but nobody seems to have come to see you stepping on them.'  And breaking off a discolored chrysanthemum he composed an impromptu poem ; 'Your residence is uncommonly grand with a beautiful tune of koto and a clear moonlight.  But it seems that you have failed in keeping a cold-hearted man.  There is no sign of someone having visited you.  Oh, very sorry to have composed a poor poem.'  And he began to court her in seductive words ; 'Here is a man who wants to listen to and praise the beautiful note of your koto.  Please don't hesitate to play the koto one more time.'

hint at ~「ほのめかす、あてこする」。
