このお妃がたはどなたも皆、我こそはとそれぞれに自信のある容貌ではあったけれど、源氏から見れば母親の世代の女性ばかりである。しかし藤壺だけはまだたいそう若くて可愛らしい。しきりに隠れようとするけれど、どうしても物陰から漏れて見えてしまうということがある。
