S先生：第2文の result in の後には一般的には名詞が来ます。This disease will result in death. とか Your efforts resulted in success. のように使います。動名詞でもよいのかもしれないがあまり見たことがないので、ここは無難に the information was at last known to the minister というふうにしましょう。さてここで be known by なのか be known to なのかという新たな問題が発生しました。SVOを受動態にしたら O+be+過去分詞+by+S の形になると中学時代から体に刷り込まれているわけですが、know の場合は by ではなくて to を使います。The minister knew the information. は The information was known to the minister. になるし、Everybody knows him. は He is known to everybodey. になるのであって by は使われない。know を含む受動態の文でby を使うのは A tree is known by its fruit.「木はその実を見れば分かる」「人はその仕事ぶりでわかる」のような場合であって、この文を能動態に変えようとしてもできません。by が主語を導かず、副詞句として添えられているだけだからです。

N君：第1文に出てくる a word の不定冠詞には「たったの一言だけさえも」のような意味が込められています。第2文の as to は「～に関して」の意でさすがに僕も慣れてきました。次の what 以下が文法的に面白いところで、「帝がある底意を持って高麗人に若宮の人相を見させた、その底意」の意ですね。前置詞 with の目的語 what secret intention が前に飛び出しています。With whom did you go there? とか Who did you go there with? と同じです。後者は Whom did you go there with? としてもOKだが、古めかしい感じがするとのことでした。
